September 3rd, 2006: John & I got married in Red Hook. John had been living here in Red Hook since he moved New York City from New Hampshire in 2000. I moved from Williamsburg to join him here in our loft in 2003.

As we planned our wedding event, Red Hook quickly became an obvious choice for location. We were able to rent the Brooklyn Waterfront Museum, a small-ish venue perfect for our guest list, and a gorgeous waterfront setting with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop. We also loved the idea of being able to show our families traveling from afar to the event “our” neighborhood, “our” New York.
Wanting to support local businesses, we had Alma cater, and Baked do our wedding cake. Both were so delicious!

Being artists, DIY was also an important part of the wedding planning, both to save money and to add our own creative touch. Our color scheme was aqua and brown, so we decorated with a collection of thrift-scored vintage aqua and brown dishes & teacups that are now our everyday set. I had fun sewing handmade ties for the guys and making jewelry for the girls. My best friend Sue designed my flowers with roses purchased the day before from the flower district in Manhattan. Sue, Kelly & I assembled them in our kitchen. Mom was there for moral support choosing my dress, and with last minute sewing projects, and is by far one of my greatest creative influences, why I DIY.
My favorite project for the wedding though was by far the invitations, engraved in wood and hand printed lovingly by John himself, a little piece of art sent to each of our guests.

To top it off, we were lucky & ever so grateful to have Hazmat Modine play music for the event. Thank you Wade Schuman!
